How to keep the original color of plant specimens

2022 08/15

When we were young, we could take a leaf and put it in a book to make a "specimen", but it would fade and become yellow and dry in a few days. How can the various plants and even flowers we see in the museum be "lifelike"?

Physical method of green conservation

This kind of method is to dry the plant materials quickly to avoid or reduce the decomposition and destruction of chlorophyll due to the influence of moisture. The faster the specimen loses water in the drying process, the more the original color can be maintained. In this way, the following matters shall be paid attention to in the process of acquisition and pressing:

1. What to harvest - about two hours on a sunny afternoon.
2. Press fast - after the specimen is collected, press it in time and cannot be placed.
3. Change absorbent paper frequently - absorbent paper should be selected with loose texture and strong water absorption. It should be dried or dried before use. The paper should be changed several times on the first few days of pressing, and at least once a day after that. The used paper can be dried or dried before repeated use.
4. With the help of desiccant, in order to accelerate water absorption, a layer of desiccant can be added to the absorbent paper between the two specimens. The desiccant can be silica gel with strong water absorption. The silica gel is granular, so it cannot be directly pressed on the specimen, otherwise it will affect the flatness of the specimen. Used can be dried and reused.
5. Heat drying, can be dried in oven and microwave oven, or can be ironed quickly.

Plant specimen is a teaching material that can intuitively express the morphology and characteristics of plants. It is the material basis for plant classification, and also an important basis for protecting plant quality and identifying plant species.
